Two Key Values

Just this week, two different special friends of Someone To Tell It To shared these quotes with us. Both of the sentiments expressed in the photos capture important values that we hold deeply. 

It absolutely takes a special heart to listen well and intentionally, a heart that desires to know others in deeper ways. It means that our interactions with others are meant to lift them up, to encourage them, and to intentionally try to not hurt anyone. 

It is kindness that creates the fertile ground for human connection. It is the desire to thoughtfully and intentionally engage with others in ways that create safety and genuine openness. It is a conscious decision to treat another person with respect and dignity, even when it’s not always given in return. It’s the willingness to exhibit a better way in our relationships, one that is not antagonistic or confrontational. 

Life doesn’t need to be a fight, a battle that produces winners versus losers. The simple act of listening to another, genuinely wanting to hear their thoughts and recognize their feelings, disarms most of the hostility and differences among us. It doesn’t mean we will always agree with one another or embrace another’s philosophy. But it does mean that we will grow in understanding of their positions and actions and outlooks. And in that understanding, we will grow in comprehension of why they believe and react as they do. That knowledge goes a long way in creating closer and more respectful connections between us all.
